I guess I'm a bad blogger! It's hard to believe that the last time I blogged it was winter. Since then we have had a scorching hot and dry summer ,and now are in the middle of my favorite season, autumn! I love all the colors of fall and the changing of the weather.

Speaking of change.....where do I begin? I have had so many changes in my life in the past 2 months.I thought my major change this year would be my son graduating from high school. While this was new territory little did I know what was just around the corner. In July we found out that my husband would be appointed pastor of a new church in another town about an hour away. Although this was our hometown, we have been gone for several years. Not only did this mean a new church family, but it also meant a new house, a new job, new schools for the kids, and a new routine for everyone. It seems that I have had very little free time with all of the unpacking and settling that takes place with a move.

I sat down the other day and was thinking about all of the changes and how everything was different. Don't get me wrong, I know that God orchestrated this change in our lives, but we all like our comfort zones. Change is hard. But, I began to think about how God never changes. Malachi 3:6 says, "For I am the LORD, I do not change. That is so comforting to me knowing, that in the midst of ALL of life's changes, God--who is in control of EVERYTHING--never changes. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. As I look back over my life, He has been in control and has always sustained me even in the times of uncertainty and change.

Another favorite scripture of mine is Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowlege him and He will direct thy paths. As I reflect on these scriptures, I know that God who has never changed, will guide me through all of the change and seasons of my life.

Praying for God's blessings on all my old and new friends and family.

Blessings,
In fact, that is a favorite around our house during winter. I personally, love anything that I can cook in the crock pot and soup makes the house smell so good. For the past several years, we have had a soup competition at our church. This is an annual fundraiser for our ladies' department, but the entire church participates by bringing or eating soup. In fact, it is a much anticipated event every year. To enter the contest, you simply bring a homemade soup. Each soup is lableld with a number so that you don't know who made the soup. For only $5.00 you can sample as much soup as your heart (or stomach) desires. You then vote for your favorite soup. Each year we have had approximately 17-20 differrent soups and we divide the soups into 3 categories: tomato, broth, and cream-base soups. There are winners in each category. Winners receive a trophy and runners up receive ribbons.

This year, I entered a taco soup and a potato soup. The taco soup is a version of a Weight Watcher's recipe. I am allergic to beans (weird, I know) and therefore I substitute the beans for rice. My husband doesn't like corn (again, weird), so to make him happy, I leave the corn out of my recipe. The potato soup was just a recipe that I found in a cookbook. I am a simple cook. I look for recipes with the least amount of ingredients. This was my first attempt at homemade potato soup, and my family LOVED it. In fact, it was perfect during those cold snow days.

She was letting me know that the local school was closed. My first thought was, "That's odd, maybe the heat is broken at the school." A few minutes later, I received a text from the college where I teach letting me know that our classes were cancelled. I realized then we must have gotten some snow or, most likely ice. I was suprised when I looked outside and saw a beautiful blanket of snow on the ground. Lynett and I sent each other a text message almost simultaenously that read, "Snow Day...WooHoo." That is one of the perks to teaching...we get snow days!
My New Year's Resolution was to be more organized, and I have been busy with some small organizing projects that have taken up a lot of my spare time. Nothing major, I started out by taking down, organizing, and storing the Christmas decor here and at the church. It seems like it takes me a while to get my house back in order after Christmas. There's always new items to find places for and odds and ends that need to be put away. My goal now is to try and update my blog at least once a week. I would like to do it more often, but at least putting a small goal in writing will help me to be accountable (at least I hope so!)

I wanted to share some pictures from Christmas. It seems like I'm taking a lot more pictures these days. Probably because the kids are getting older and it's making this Mama very sentimental about holidays! I also miss my extended family that I don't get to see very often which is one reason why I started blogging. Hope you enjoy a few pictures from our home.

It seems like the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas just fly by. It's funny, when I was a kid it seemed like it took forever for Christmas to finally come, but now that I am older it seems to come quicker each year. I like to celebrate the entire month of December. My favorite part of the season is spending time with my family, friends, and church family. I like to put up my Christmas decorations the weekend after Thanksgiving. Each year, we "Deck the Walls" at the church the Sunday after Thanksgiving. This is a time of not only decorating, but fellowshipping and enjoying Christmas music--which is another thing I LOVE about this time of the year. I wanted to share a few pictures of the church decoations.

This is the tree in the church foyer (sorry the ladder is in the picture.)
When we "Deck the Walls", women, men, teenagers and even children participate. The following picture is of one of our youth, Royal. Royal is blind, but he enjoys coming to listen to the music and to chat. Royal always has plenty to talk about!
In fact,I have been to a couple of Christmas parties and have indulged in many Christmas treats! As I type this, I'm wearing a Christmas sweater and listening to Christmas music. However, winter does not officially begin until December 20th or 21st (I can never remember); therefore I think it is still okay to blog about fall and share some pictures from various events this fall.

First of all, we spend a lot of time at football games from September through the beginning of November. I have mentioned previously, that I know very little about sports. I had no brothers and my father was not much of a sports fan, so I was never exposed to sports. However, I love going to the high school football games. First of all, my oldest son, Caleb plays the alto saxophone in the band. I too played saxophone in the marching band and have fond memories of marching and playing in the stands. My younger son, Josh, loves sports and has been on the junior high football team. This was his first year to play on the high school team. I do know that he is #88 and his position is tight-end, but that is about the extent of my knowledge. I'm one of these Momma's sitting on pins and needles praying he doesn't get hurt!

In addition to home football games and away games, there were band competitions. I enjoy watching the band perform their shows. This year, the MHS Band's theme was "We Didn't Start the Earth Wind and Fire".

I love the Christmas season, and I must confess, that I even know how many days until Christmas (30 days!). I have started some Christmas decorating and I have even bought a few gifts. However, I like to make sure that I do not rush through the Thanksgiving Holiday. While the Bible tells us that we are to give thanks in all circumstances, many times I am guilty of not giving thanks like I should. I would like to take the time to blog about some special blessings in my life.

First of all I am thankful for my salvation. My mother took me to church and at the age of 7, I accepted Christ as my Savior. While I admit that I can't remember the exact day or the circumstances, I vividly remember realizing that I was a sinner, and kneeling at an altar and praying the sinner's prayer.

Next I am thankful for my husband. God blessed me with a wonderful Christian man and he has been my best friend and soul mate for 19 years. He is a great husband and father and always puts his family before himself.

I would also like to give thanks for Caleb, Joshua, and Katie Beth. God gave me 3 bright and healthy children with their own unique talents and personalities. Each day they bring me joy and I am so thankful that they have each made a decision to live for Christ. They are so much fun. Here are some pictures from our Thankgiving trip last fall to Gatlinburg. They were being silly!
I am thankful for my Mom and sister, Tobye. Losing Dad in 2007 has caused us to walk through a dark valley in our lives, but even in death, God was faithful, allowing us to not only witness Dad's salvation, but also his passing from this life into Heaven.
Here is a picture of me with my Mom, sister, kids, and my Grandma Marie, my only living grandparent who suffers from dementia. The next picture is of my dad. It is a blessing to know, that one day will all be reunited in Heaven. Dad has already received his physical healing, and some day Grandma will receive complete healing in her mind.
Each year our church attends the state Girls' Club Jamboree. It is an event for local churches to bring girls ages 3-18 for an overnight trip. This year's event was in early October. We left on a Friday afternoon and loaded up the church van with 9 girls and 3 chaperones-- and lots of overnight bags and necessities. The campground is about a 2 and a half hour drive and the girls had fun chatting and singing on the way. That was what I used to love the most about church trips was riding in the van. I can remember all of the fun I had just traveling with my friends (Melody, Shelley, MiChele, Lynn, Jean, Tanya, Kim) just to name a few.

I appreciate my friends Karen and Ashely for going with me to help chaperone the trip. Eveyone is so busy this time of year and I know there were other things they could have done, but they gave of there time to help out. Thanks Ashley and Karen!

Here are a few pictures of us chaperones after the long van ride with a bunch of giddy girls!

Wow, it has been over a week since my last blog entry. Katie Beth has not had a chance to blog either because our family has been so busy lately. In hindsight, the beginning of the school year was probably not a good time to begin our blogs, but I have come to find out that every time of the year has its own unique busyness.

This fall has been consumed with football, band, and senior year activities. Caleb began taking concurrent courses at the local community college this semester. This has been quite an adjustment for him, but I am so proud that he is doing well in both classes. Juggling these courses with his high school work, marching season, and church activities has been tough, but he has risen to the occasion and is doing great.

The following picture was taken during the band senior night at one of the home football games. Each senior was recognized and escorted by their parents. Each senior was presented with a pin. The wind was blowing, it was raining, and it was COLD. But I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

For Josh and Katie Beth, this has become, "The Year of the Projects". Both of them have had to create a model of a cell--which is surprising since he is a sophomore and she is in 5th grade. I do not have one artistic bone in my body. Seriously, drawing a stickman is a stretch for me. Luckily, the kids must have inherited some artistic ability from Danny. They gave me a list of what they needed me to buy to represent each part of the cell and did the work themselves.
Katie Beth has been studying about Indians in social studies. Each child was required to complete a project on a tribe of their choice. Katie Beth chose, the Comanches. This is the only tribe I knew anything about and my knowledge was limited to the fact that I have watched Lonesome Dove several times. Anyhow she researched the tribe with little help from me and completed her project. The Indian projects were on display when we went to parent teacher conferences last week and I was amazed of the creativity of these 5th graders. Anyway, from what I saw, any of these students would have been excellent to appear on "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader."
Recently, we had some very special guests at our church for a Kids Krusade. My cousin, Michael and his wife Laura, serve as children's pastors in Indiana and they were able to come to our neck of the woods for a few days. The theme for the week was centered around Jesus being our Superhero. The villian, Mr. Sinister, would show up each night with some evil plan. But, alas, Captain Light would arive and use the Word of God to fight the evil forces of Mr. Sinister and his crew. Needless to say, the kids were anxious each night to see what the bad Mr. Sinister would do and how Captain Light would save the day. On the last night of the crusade, Mr. Sinister even kidnapped Pastor Pankey (my husband).

Here we have Captain Light with the Professor. The Professor was somewhat absent-minded and spent most of the week working on a robot. However, we weren't too sure if the Professor would be able to get this robot together. He was REALLY scatter-brained.
One thing I have learned from teaching children is that you never know what they are going to say and that I learn as much from them as they do from me. A few Wednesday nights ago, my lesson was based on this familiar scripture in Ephesians:

26 Go ahead and be angry. You do well to be angry — but don't use your anger as fuel for revenge. And don't stay angry. Don't go to bed angry. (from THE MESSAGE: The Bible in Contemporary Language © 2002 by Eugene H. Peterson. All rights reserved.).

This seemed like a simple enough lesson. One of my helper's and I staged a skit where we pretended to get into an argument in front of the kids. We even yelled at each other and called each other names (don't worry, we didn't curse). We really had most of the kids fooled and Katie Beth was about to get upset. We finally explained to the kids that we were showing them an example. We talked about how we can get angry and not sin. I used an example of how I had been cut off in traffic earlier that day and I could have let my temper get the best of me, but I didn't. It was a good lesson for "the kids". Little did I know what I would be faced with the next day.

The very next day, Danny was visiting someone at a hospital in Memphis. He was inside the hospital about 25 minutes. When he returned to the parking garage the truck he had driven was gone. It had been stolen from the top floor of the parking garage around 11:30 AM in the morning. The truck that was stolen had been my father's truck. My Dad bought this Mark III Chevrolet Silverado in 1992. The truck was somewhat of a hobby for Daddy. He was always adding extra accessories and kept it in mint condition. Daddy literally drove the truck to and from work and it only had 67,000 miles on it when it was stolen. His desire had been to give it to one of his grandsons. Daddy died in 2007 and this past summer my Mom let us start driving the truck. The plan was for my son, Josh, to get the truck when he turned 16 in December.

When Danny called me to tell me the truck had been stolen, my inital response was shock. Luckily, I was in Memphis about 20 minutes away. My next reaction was sadness. As you can imagine I began to cry as I realized we would most likely never see Daddy's truck again and that whoever this thief was didn't just steal a vehicle but stole a precious memory from me and my family. Then I thought about my son, Josh, who was already bursting with pride that in just a few short months he was going to get "Papaw's truck". That's when I got mad. I wasn't just a little miffed or angry-- because now I realized how this would disappoint Josh. I was more than just mad... I was MAMA MAD.

There was a nice security guard at the hospital that was more than helpful. However, we had to wait over an hour for a police officer. When he did arrive, my temper was starting to boil. He took down the facts and was very aloof and proceeded to tell us that this particular model of a truck was "one of the most easiest to steal". I was just about to give the officer a piece of my mind, when Ephesians 4:26 immediately popped in my mind. Less than 24 hours earlier, I had talked to the children about how sometimes it is okay to get angry but we don't have to sin. While I am mad that someone stole Daddy's truck, I realize that Jesus died for that thief, just like he died for me. I pray that we get the truck back, but I pray that whoever took it will somehow come to the knowledge of Jesus as His personal Savior.

I also have reminded myself that God sees the big picture in my life, while I only get to see little snapshots at a time. Perhaps someone in my family would have been hurt in a terrible wreck in the truck. We don't know the why, just that God is in control and we must trust Him.

Here is a picture of the truck, which was known around town as "Big Man's" truck. Big Man was my Daddy's nickname. I included a picture of him so you can see how he got his name (smile).
We have just finished a wonderful revival, but this week has been wild to say the least. It seems as though there have been multiple school projects and other activities. Sometimes it feels like going to work is almost a break! (jk). With all of the busyness, I have not had time to blog for a few days. I have however had several ideas of things I want to blog about, so stay tuned!

My oldest son is a high school senior. Just typing this makes me feel so old! It seems like just yesterday I was a senior. Even though graduation is not until May, we are already busy with many senior year activities. Tonight Danny and I worked on his senior ad for the yearbook. I went through many photo albums and scrapbooks to find the "perfect photos". Well, you guessed it, to Mama they're all perfect! He did give me free reign to choose the pictures I wanted as long as I did not put any "embarrassing" pictures in the ad. Well, I assumed this meant, no naked baby pictures, but to a teenage boy it could mean many other things. So I just used my best judgement. Below are some of the pictures that I chose. I must say I was a bit misty-eyed. I think Danny was too, but he didn't let it show. I can already tell that I will need to start stockpiling the Kleenexes before May!

The first picture is Caleb at 6 weeks and the next picture is one of his senior portraits. It just seems like yesterday I dressed him in that little Disney outfit.
In fact, there are many pictures of him with Josh since they are only 16 months apart. It was hard to choose from so many pictures, but these are especially sweet to me. Katie Beth is wearing a dress that my Grandma Marie made for my sister, Tobye, when she was two. Tobye wore it in a Valentine Contest at church (she won too, my sister was one cutie patootie!). As you can see, Katie Beth wore it well too!
We are so proud of Caleb. God has blessed us with a wonderful Christian young man that desires to do His will. He has a dry sense of humor and is good-natured. He plays the saxophone on our praise and worship team at church and is active in the youth group. He is earnestly praying for direction as he chooses a career path. Please remember him in your prayers. Pray for me too, that I make it through this year!
I kept telling
her to let me learn more about blogging and then maybe in a "few weeks" I would let her have

her own blog. Well, here it is--only 8 days since I started my blog-- and guess what we've spent
the night doing? You guessed it, Katie has a blog. Next thing you know, I'll have to help Danny,
Josh, or Caleb (they'll probably just stick to facebooking). While I love Facebook, you can't personalize and make it your own like you can on a blog--that's the girly-girl coming out in me.

If you would like to check out Katie Beth's blog, click on over to
I am sure she would love for you to stop by!
From the moment we walked into the church this morning, we were surprised. While we knew there would be a guest speaker today, we didn't know who it would be. I was so happy when I walked in this morning and saw Dr. L.V. Rigney and Sister Rigney. This couple served as my pastor for most of my life, and they have been our mentors in the ministry. We were honored that they would come to make our day special. Brother Rigney delivered a great sermon and Sister Rigney blessed the church with a special song. I have always loved hearing Sister Rigney sing and it was an honor to accompany her on the piano (it was like old times!)
Like most men, he doesn't like us to make a fuss over him on his birthday, but he always makes ours so special that we wanted to do something a little extra for this milestone birthday. Instead of celebrating just one day, we had sort of a "Danny Festival" that lasted all Labor Day weekend.

After I made him his favorite cookies and a big supper of fried chicken (you know preachers love chicken!), we went to the high school football game. This year our oldest son, Caleb, is a senior and plays saxophone in the band. Our younger son, Josh, is a sophomore and is on the football team. While I enjoy watching my kids, I am not much of a sports fan. However, Danny, loves sports, so it was fitting that the opening game of the season would just happen to be on his birthday. Before the game, Katie Beth gave her Daddy a ball cap with the high school's colors and mascot. Caleb & Josh gave him a wooden sign that reads, "Touchdown Arkansas", and I gave him a Razorback watch. If you haven't figured it out yet, I am married to a die-hard Razorback fan. He's been known to be called, "Dan, Dan, the Razorback Man". After the game, Mom & Tobye came by with sweet cards ( and some moolah!).
Monday was Labor Day, so we were able to meet our families for some Mexican food which is his favorite (besides my chicken, of course!). It was a quick trip but we had a nice time eating with his Mom and Dad, my Mom and sister, and our nephew, Austin.
We had a lot of fun celebrating. I hope we made Danny feel special. I love you, Honey!
A special thank you to those of you who have left nice comments about my blog.Tonyahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12457208708495598878noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6773925446163671318.post-59271940384222687952009-09-07T11:15:00.000-07:002009-09-07T11:58:38.880-07:00My First Blog
For quite some time now, I have been thinking about journaling by blogging. I follow a few other blogs and my 10 year-old daugher, Katie Beth, suggested that I create my own. Since this was her idea, I let her create the name for this blog. I guess it is no suprise that she would choose, "I-Tonya", since "I-Carly" is one of her favorite television shows.

I am married to a pastor and am the proud mother of 3 children: Caleb (17), Joshua (15), and Katie Beth (10). Between band, football, dance, and church our household is a whirlwind of activities, but I would not change it for anything in the world. I know that all too soon they will grow up and leave home.

I have been a nurse for 19 years, with the majority of those years working in oncology or hospice. Three years ago, I joined the nursing faculty at a community college, and have found nursing education to be a rewarding career. Not only is it rewarding, it works well with my busy schedule. I continue to work once in a while for a hospice agency in Memphis, Tennesse.

God has blessed me not only with wonderful children, but he picked out for me a special man who is my best friend and "completes" me. We celebrated his 40th birthday a few days ago (I celebrated mine in June) and this evening we will be able to meet our families for dinner who live about an hour away.

Since I am new to the "blogging world", it may take me a few times before I get pictures posted. Please be patient with me.

Happy Labor Day and God Bless!
